Junior String Orchestra

This group is for young string players who are grasping the basics and have been learning for around a year. They learn valuable lessons on how to play as a group and gain ensemble experience to prepare them for the more senior groups.

Meet the Bands!

Guitar Group

Director: Michael Waterhouse.


9.30am – 11.00am -  Hi 4


The Guitar Group has a membership of students with a wide range of experience. The ensemble plays a varied repertoire- some of it arranged specifically for them by their director.


A minimum standard for new members is that grade work should at least be begun.


HMC Wind Band

Director: Emily Ferguson.


9.30am – 12.30pm - The Chapel


This band is for students who have grasped the basic techniques of a wind or percussion instrument and are ready to attempt music that is a little more challenging.


The repertoire features popular and film themes


Intermediate String Orchestra

Director: Amanda Crawley


11:00 am – 12.30am - Gg 5


ISO consists of about 30 members ranging in level from about Grade 3 to Grade 5.


The orchestra plays a varied mixture of classical music, pop and film music arrangements. The players are encouraged to experience a wide variety of musical styles in an enjoyable and stimulating environment.


Entrance to the ensemble is by teacher recommendation, generally given in the last half of the summer term, and to outside players who are grade 3 to 5 standard.



Harrogate Youth Jazz Orchestra (HYJO)

Director: Alistair Gibson


9.30am – 12.30 pm - Mu 4/5


HYJO is a senior ensemble offering opportunities to those students who wish to explore jazz technique and repertoire. The band plays from a large library of music ranging from traditional big band numbers to more contemporary music.


HYJO regularly perform concerts throughout the year as well as jazz venues and cafes in the area. The ensemble consists of about 20 members, with a keen interest in jazz and rock music. New members need to have some experience of improvisation although this will be taught as part of rehearsals.


Entry to HYJO is by audition.

Blast Off!

Director: Emma Calvert


9.30am – 11:00 am - Maths Corridor


Blast Off is suitable for all woodwind and brass players who have either just started learning or have had lessons for about a year.


The band plays music tailored to the abilities of the children who turn up and serves as an introduction to playing in an ensemble as well as addressing some of the basic skills of playing a wind instrument.



Harrogate Youth Wind Orchestra (HYWO)

Director: Stephen Price


9.30am – 12:30pm - Main Hall


HYWO is a full symphonic wind band playing from the large range of music written for such an ensemble. They are regularly invited to perform in the local community as well as taking part in National Festivals.


This is a new band and the required standard to gain a place is around grade 5. The band will be 50+ in number and be able to enjoy playing more challenging pieces from and excited and varied repertoire.


A full commitment to the band is essential, with regular attendance to rehearsals and concerts.

Harrogate Youth String Orchestra (HYS)

Harrogate Youth Strings is the senior string orchestra at the centre. Members experience a wide variety of the rich string orchestra repertoire.


A full commitment to the band is essential, with regular attendance to rehearsals and concerts.



Ukulele Group

Director:  Michael Waterhouse


11:00 – 12:30pm - Hi 1


The Ukulele Group welcomes Ukulele players who can already play the Ukulele to a reasonable standard.


The group is made up largely of adults at the moment but welcomes all ages. (See here for Harrogate Ukelele Group’s web-site)


The Accidentals

9:45 – 10:45 Mu2


This for anybody from year 4 up to Adult who either already knows that singing is great fun or wants to discover the joys of singing. Come along and experience Amanda’s expertise and thoroughly enjoyable group for anybody who enjoys singing and wants to improve.

Harrogate Music Centre Concert Dress


For most players, the dress code for concerts is-


Boys.

Senior ensembles: black trousers, black shirt and black shoes

Intermediate ensembles: black trousers, white shirt and black shoes.

Junior ensembles: black trousers, white shirt and black bow tie.


Girls.

Senior ensembles: Black dress or black trousers and black shirt/blouse. Black shoes.

Intermediate and junior ensembles: Black skirt or trousers, black shoes and white shirt/blouse.


There is an exception though-

HYJO

Boiler suits and/or black HYJO t shirts and black trousers or Purple braces/ties with above concert dress


Please approach ensemble directors if your child requires bespoke concert dress



Beginner Ukulele Group

Director: Mark Prince


9:30 – 10:45 - Hi 1


This group is for those who would like to learn how to play a Ukulele. This is great fun and open to all. All you need is a Ukulele!


The Beginner group provides the foundation for those that would like to move on up to the general Ukulele Group that meets later on in the morning.

Parental Guidance (PGs)

Director: Emma Calvert


11:15 – 12:30  - Restaurant


The PGs is a new band designed for adults who have either never played a wind instrument before or not for a very long time! We have great fun learning the fundamental aspects of playing a wind instrument through music to suit the range of abilities and experience.

Chamber Orchestra

11:15 – 12:30 - Gg 6


Chamber Orchestra is a Senior level ensemble which welcomes string and woodwind players who are of a more advanced standard. This ensemble is new and enjoys exploring the large chamber orchestra repertoire from classical to contemporary music.


Entrance to this ensemble is by audition.
